SAUCIER -- Mississippi Gulf Coast needed a playoff Tuesday but won its first MGCCC Fall Invitational title at Grand Bear Golf Course.

The Bulldogs defeated Spring Hill College on the first playoff hole after both teams finished at 1-over 577. Freshman Colin Troxler had the only birdie, with all seven other golfers making par on the ninth hole.

"It feels really good," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "We've been trying to win this tournament for 13 years. We were excited about that."

There were 14 teams from 11 schools participating in the Invitational, with Gulf Coast also winning MACJC Event No. 4, which was held simultaneously among seven teams from the state.

East Central finished 35 shots back in that portion of the competition.

Spring Hill's Wesley Hunter fired a second-round 68 to finish 4-under par and claim Invitational medalist honors. By one shot ahead of Gulf Coast's Grant Motter and Colin Troxler, along with Spring Hill's Kalle Nisson.

Motter chipped in for birdie to win MACJC medalist over Troxler. Gulf Coast's Phillip Hickam finished at 2-over in a tie for seventh place.

Freshman Jonathon Newman rebounded from an opening-round 85 to shoot 68 Tuesday to lead the Bulldogs to a strong finish.

Zack Hammons, from East Central, joined Hunter, Motter, Troxler and Nisson on the Invitational All-Tournament Team.

The MACJC event All-Tournament Team included Motter, Troxler, Hammons, Hickam and Copiah-Lincoln's Philip Heine.

Gulf Coast led by one stroke over Spring Hill, and both teams played significantly better Tuesday. The tournament was played around the bad weather brought by the remnants of Hurricane Patricia.

"It was just a tough day Sunday with all that rain and wind," Snell said. "I was proud of them for not giving up. They're a feisty bunch. They deal with adversity, so I was proud of them."
