Junior Colleges

One of South Mississippi’s top young football coaches is on the move

The Pearl River Community College football staff has undergone a significant change prior to the season opener.

When Seth Smith was hired away from East Central High School to take over the PRCC football program in November, he pointed to Michael King as one of his most important hires at offensive coordinator.

Nine months after his hiring was announced, King is out at PRCC.

The Sun Herald confirmed with PRCC spokesman Patrick Ochs on Friday that King will not be with the staff this season.

“Coach King and the staff have mutually agreed to part ways,” Ochs said in a text message.

It was not yet clear who would replace King as offensive coordinator.

King spent the last three seasons as the head coach at Greene County, compiling a record of 28-10 there. The team won the Region 7-4A championship in his final season in Leakesville.

King, who is considered one of the top up-and-coming coaches in South Mississippi, served as the offensive coordinator at George County (2014-16) and Greene County (2010-13).

PRCC’s schedule is set to be announced on Tuesday.

The Mississippi Association of Community Colleges delayed the start of the 2020 junior college season until Oct. 1 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

King did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
