Southern Miss redshirt junior tight end Taylor Marini is possibly out for the season due to an injury, he said in a statement he released on Twitter Friday.

Marini addressed fans and family in his tweet on Friday.

“I regret to inform you that because of an ongoing injury I'm battling, I will not be playing in the season opener at Kentucky and possibly the entire 2016 season,” Marini said. “Best of luck to our guys as they travel to Lexington.

“I have complete faith they will deliver the type of season our University and fans can be proud of. I will continue to heal and work to be back on the field again with my family in 2017. SMTTT.”

Marini served as USM's primary tight end in 2015, proving a strong blocker in the ground game.

Marini, a native of Chuluota, Fla., caught six passes for 65 yards and one touchdown in his first season with the Golden Eagles last year after transferring from Copiah-Lincoln Community College.

Redshirt juniot Julian Allen, who sat out last year with an injury, is listed as the first-string tight end headed in to Saturday's 6:30 p.m. contest at Kentucky. Redshirt sophomore Jay'Shawn Washington, who suffered a season-ending injury in the 2015 opener, is listed as his backup.
