The battle for the No. 2 quarterback spot behind senior Nick Mullens at Southern Miss is very much up in the air early in fall camp.
Junior Kwadra Griggs left the spring with an edge on redshirt junior Parker Adamson, but you can throw another name into the mix – freshman Keon Howard of Laurel.
Howard worked with the No. 2 squad recently in practice, but first-year head coach Jay Hopson said Monday that that's no sign of the freshman making a quick climb up the depth chart.
“That's going be a battle all the way up until game day. Certainly Nick is the starter right now, but that two spot, that thing is up for grabs,” Hopson said according to a press release. “Keon worked twos the other day. It's just a battle. Don't read into that. There's nothing really into that right now.”
Griggs, who is a first-year transfer from Itawamba Community College, completed 13 of 27 passes for 133 yards, a touchdown and an interception in the spring game. At ICC in 2015, Griggs completed 59.8 percent of his passes for 2,138 yards and 18 touchdowns.
The 6-foot-4, 214-pound Adamson has yet to take the field as a Golden Eagle after signing with USM out of Oxford in 2013.
Howard, who led Laurel to the 2014 Class 5A state title, threw for 3,317 yards, 43 touchdowns and 18 interceptions as a senior.
USM opens the season on Sept. 3 at Kentucky.
