TIM ISBELL/SUN HERALD Scott Berry concentrates on the game against Rice, Saturday, Apr. 23, 2016.

Junior right-hander Mason Walley will be the starting pitcher for Southern Miss in Friday's 6 p.m. series opener against Louisiana Tech in Hattiesburg.

Walley moves into the Friday night spot after USM's No. 1 starter, Cord Cockrell, left last week's game against Western Kentucky with shoulder soreness. Cockrell, who is out indefinitely, is 7-1 with a 3.55 ERA in 12 starts this season.

Walley is 1-2 with a 5.50 ERA in eight appearances this season. He has made two starts in the mid-week role.

Walley, who is a native of Taylorsville, is in his first year at USM after transferring in from LSU-Eunice. He was 11-1 with a 2.35 ERA as a sophomore at LSU-Eunice last season.

Sophomore left-hander Kirk McCarty will make the Saturday start for the second consecutive week. The former Oak Grove product, who has been USM's best starter in Conference USA competition, is 5-0 with a 2.81 ERA in 12 starts this season.

Freshman right-hander Walker Powell will make his second consecutive start on Sunday after making his first start at the college level last week. He is 3-2 with a 3.67 ERA in 15 appearances. Powell allowed three earned runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings in a 13-4 win over WKU on Sunday.

Berry could have chosen to move Jake Winston and Nick Johnson back into the weekend rotation, but he likes how the two men have been effective out of the bullpen recently.

Louisiana Tech will start left-hander Phillip Diehl (4-4, 4-30) on Friday, right-hander Cameron Linck (3-0, 3.5) on Saturday and right-hander Casey Sutton (6-0, 1-31) on Sunday.

USM is 34-14 with an 18-6 record in the conference. Louisiana Tech is 33-14 and 15-9.
