Southern Miss holds off Troy; Ole Miss, MSU also win

Jake Winston struck out seven as Southern Miss beat Troy 6-2 on Saturday at Blue Wahoos Stadium.

Jake Sandlin, Dylan Burdeaux, Tim Lynch and Hunter Slater each had two hits for the Golden Eagles (9-2). Lynch, Taylor Braley, Chase Scott and Chuckie Robinson each drove in runs for Southern Miss, who beat Michigan State 2-0 on Friday.

No. 13 Ole Miss 8, No. 18 Coastal Carolina 2: Tate Blackman doubled twice and recorded three RBIs as Ole Miss (9-1) continued its business at the Chanticleer Classic with a victory over No. 18 Coastal Carolina, the host of the tournament.

A key to the Rebels' success was getting the leadoff hitter on base. Seven times, the Ole Miss leadoff hitter reached base and in five of those innings, the leadoff Rebel came around to score. Blackman returned to form with a 3-for-5 day, a team-high three RBIs and his fifth multi-hit game of the season. Errol Robinson and Holt Perdzock chipped in with two hits apiece.

On the mound, the Rebel pitchers combined to strike out 10 Chanticleers. Ole Miss starter Chad Smith (1-1) earned his first win as a Rebel, allowing just two runs over 5 innings.

No. 17 Mississippi State 9, No. 20 Southern Cal 7: Freshman left-hander Kale Breaux made sure Mississippi State came out on the right side of another West Coast baseball thriller. Breaux pitched the final inning and got a strikeout and groundout with a runner at third base to end the Bulldogs' 8-7 victory over No. 20 Southern California in the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic at Dedeaux Field.

MSU (8-3) moved to 1-1 on its first road trip of the season. The Bulldogs fought hard in a 2-1 loss at No. 9 UCLA Friday night.

Brent Rooker was hit by a pitch and Nathaniel Lowe doubled to get it going. Reid Humphreys followed with an RBI-single. Elih Marrero then began his first three-hit night with an RBI-single. Hunter Stovall followed with a sacrifice bunt. Luke Alexander then capped the inning's scoring with an RBI-single.
