NAIA William Carey men shock Southern Miss, 84-78

The William Carey men's basketball team topped Southern Miss, 84-78, Monday night for the NAIA program's first win ever win over the crosstown Division 1 school in Hattiesburg.

Leo Garrett led Carey (3-3) with 22 points and six rebounds and Emmanuel Davis added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Junior point guard Khari Price led USM (0-3) with 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

The two programs had met nine times previously with USM winning convincingly in each of the games.

USM, which is under a self-imposed postseason ban due to NCAA allegations against former coach Donnie Tyndall, travels to play Morehead State at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles were set to have a difficult season, but this result will be upsetting to many USM fans.

USM coach Doc Sadler is in his second year on the job after going 9-20 last season.
