Former Southern Miss pitcher Andrew Pierce, who is in the St. Louis Cardinals organization, has been handed a 50-game suspension after violating the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program by testing positive for an amphetamine.
Pierce, considered one of the best pitchers ever at USM, was drafted in the eighth round of the 2013 MLB draft. He played his first season with the Class A State College (Pa.) Spikes and finished with a 2-2 record and 2.11 ERA.
Pierce went 16-6 in two seasons at USM after starting his college career at Jones County Junior College. He was named first-team All-Conference USA in his two seasons at Southern Miss.
