Get ready, Baseburg. Southern Miss will host regional with record seed

Southern Miss will host a regional for the fifth time and as the highest-earned seed in program history.

The Golden Eagles were announced as the No. 9 overall seed Monday, narrowly missing a coveted top-eight seed, but matched up with Florida and the eight-seed Gainesville Regional.

“Hattiesburg is going to be crazy,” coach Christian Ostrander said Sunday after winning the league final. “They call it Baseburg for a reason. I’m proud for the players and proud for the program. It’s going to be a party.”

Making the trek to the Hub City is OVC champion Little Rock as the four seed, two-seed Virginia and third-seeded Conference USA champion Jacksonville State.

Southern Miss will be the lone SBC team hosting a regional, but the league received four at-large bids to place five teams in the field of 64.

Coastal Carolina will join the Tallahassee Regional, Texas State was placed in College Station, Troy snuck into the Gainesville Regional.

Mississippi State will host a regional in Starkville and joining that bracket is SBC tournament runner-up Louisiana.

Southern Miss is hosting a regional for the third time since 2022 and for the second season in a row for the first time in program history.

The Golden Eagles won their third conference tournament title in four years, Sunday.
