Southern Miss walks off Ole Miss in thriller, improves to 3-0 against the SEC
Southern Miss survived another SEC visitor.
The 7th-ranked Golden Eagles (15-2) walked off Ole Miss (15-3), 2-1, notching their third win over an SEC team in as many games.
Tucker Stockman provided the separating swing in a duel of pitchers. The catcher turned a 2-2 fastball into a line drive into the right-center gap, scoring Davis Gillespie from second base.
“(Stockman) has been in the moment before, and he’s been in that moment before,” coach Christian Ostrander said. “For him to deliver again, it was very special for him.”
Southern Miss entered the night No. 1 in RPI and Ole Miss No. 8, making it a Quad 1 game for both teams. The win moved the Golden Eagles to 9-1 in Q1 games.
One solo home run from each order is all that was surrendered by the opposing staffs for the first eight innings. Rebel outfielder Tristan Bissetta put the first run on the board via long ball in the fifth and USM infielder Kyle Morrison answered with a blast in the bottom half of the inning.
Thomas Crabtree worked three scoreless innings as the USM starter while Bruce Littleton, Josh Och and Camden Clark combined to allow just two baserunners over the last three innings. Ole Miss managed just three hits for the evening.
“The guys pitched well,” Ostrander said. “They executed pitches and really attacked them, went right after them. That’s what you have to do. You can’t mess around with good hitters and try to nitpick here and there. You got to go at them.”
It was the 10th straight win for USM in games featuring exactly three combined runs scored. That streak dates back to 2019. Southern Miss announced the 5th-largest crowd in Pete Taylor Park history with 5,775 visitors.
The two teams will meet again in a neutral site contest at Trustmark Park in Pearl on April 14.
The Golden Eagles begin conference play this weekend with three games at Arkansas State. Ole Miss also goes on the road to open the SEC docket, facing No. 2 Texas.
“Moving into conference play, now, they’ve been battle-tested,” Ostrander said of his group. “They know what they’re capable of. Now they just have to go out there and perform every day.”
