After reaching No. 10 this week, Southern Miss continued its hot start to the year with an upset win over No. 4 Mississippi State at home in a heavyweight clash between two one-loss teams.

Southern Miss got off to a fast start in the first inning thanks to a three-run home run from Drey Barrett. Solo runs in the second and fourth innings extended the lead to 5-0.

Mississippi State began to mount a comeback as it took the lead after scoring three runs in the fifth and the seventh innings. Southern Miss promptly struck back at the bottom of the seventh with runs from Matthew Russo and Barrett to retake the lead.

Josh Och and Camden Clark were then able to silence the Bulldogs in the eighth and ninth innings to secure a 7-6 win for the Golden Eagles.

Southern Miss jumped to 11-1 with an 11-game win streak and will go on to face Nicholls at Pete Taylor Park on Wednesday, March 4 at 6 p.m. Meanwhile, Mississippi State fell to 11-2.
