Southern Miss head baseball coach Scott Berry will retire from coaching following the 2023 season, the school announced Tuesday.

Berry has led the program for 14 seasons and has been on staff for 23 years. He first arrived at USM in 2001 and has been a part of 873 wins, 15 regionals and a trip to the College World Series.

Since taking over as head coach, Berry has won a program-record 517 games and counting. Berry, 60, led the Golden Eagles to five regular season conference championships and four league titles.

Berry’s teams have produced a Division I-high six consecutive 40-win seasons.

Friday night’s game against Louisiana will be “Scott Berry Night,” where he and his family will be honored during the last regular season home series of the season.

The school announced a search for Berry’s successor is already under way and a new head coach “should be named in the near future.”

“I could coach baseball forever; however, life continues to remind me our time is precious,” Berry said in a statement. “For the past 23 years, it has been my honor to work at The University of Southern Mississippi. The 2023 baseball season will be my final season as head baseball coach. Our program has a solid foundation for this transition in leadership.

“I am sincerely grateful and humbled by your support for me and this program. Throughout my career, I have recognized that no one can do anything alone. I am grateful to all the staff, players, coaches, and Administrations for everything they have done to build our program. “

Southern Miss will host the Ragin’ Cajuns this weekend before heading to Montgomery for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
