Heartbreak in Hattiesburg, LSU stuns Southern Miss
Heartbreak in Hattiesburg unfolded for the Golden Eagle faithful.
LSU escaped Pete Taylor Park with a stunning 7-6 victory.
Southern Miss carried a 6-2 lead over LSU into the ninth inning only to watch it evaporate in the bottom of the frame. The Tigers used two home runs to force extra innings and walked it off in the bottom of the 10th.
The Golden Eagles squandered a superb start from Hurston Waldrep, who struck out 11 batters in 6.2 inning pitched. Waldrep had retired 12 consecutive batters at one point.
Christopher Sargent had three hits for USM, including his 21st home run of the season.
Southern Miss will face Kennesaw State in the elimination game on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Hurston Waldrep struck out six consecutive batters and sat down 12 straight Tigers before finally giving up another baserunner. A two-out LSU double on Waldrep’s 119th pitch ended his day. Dalton Rogers is on the mound now for the Golden Eagles.

Jacob Hasty enters the game in relief for LSU and allows a Southern Miss run in the seventh. Will McGillis and Gabe Montenegro drew walks and both advanced on wild pitches. Rodrigo Montenegro drove in McGillis with a fielder’s choice.
