Southern Miss to join Sun Belt far earlier than expected. Here are the details.
The University of Southern Mississippi announced Friday it was terminating its membership with Conference USA on June 30, 2022.
Southern Miss announced its intention to join the Sun Belt conference in October, 2021. Sun Belt commissioner Keith Gill stated then the Golden Eagles would join the league “on or before July 1, 2023.”
According to the official statement from USM, the school notified C-USA of its intentions to leave the league a year earlier in early December.
Fellow Conference USA members Marshall and Old Dominion also announced their intentions to leave the league after June 30 of this year.
The three schools join James Madison in moving over to the Sun Belt this summer.
