Southern Miss’ Korey Robertson gets a shot to prove himself to NFL scouts

Korey Robertson’s decision to leave Southern Miss a year early is paying off so far.

The receiver was included Tuesday on the list of official invitees to take part in this year’s NFL combine on Feb. 27-March 5 in Indianapolis.

One surprising omission from the list was USM senior running back Ito Smith, who took part in this year’s Senior Bowl following another outstanding campaign.

Robertson decided to declare for the NFL Draft following a breakout junior season. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound receiver caught 76 passes for 1,106 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Over his first two seasons, the Greenwood native caught 51 passes for 637 yards and six touchdowns.

Robertson was very difficult to handle for opposing cornerbacks this season thanks to his powerful build and athleticism. He often worked his way through tackles for big gainers.

“Korey is very, very strong,” USM senior safety Jomez Applewhite said last year. “We’ve got a nickname for him, we call him ‘D-Block.’ When I first saw him I thought he was a defensive end or something. It’s kind of tough bringing him down.”

Two Mississippi State players are also set to participate in the combine — offensive tackle Martinas Rankin and tight end Jordan Thomas.

Ole Miss has four players who were invited — linebacker Marquis Haynes, running back Jordan Wilkins, defensive tackle Breeland Speaks and offensive tackle Rod Taylor.
