Southern Miss has its starting quarterback for Saturday's season opener against Kentucky.
USM head coach Jay Hopson confirmed to the Sun Herald Friday night that sophomore Keon Howard will start the 3 p.m. game at Roberts Stadium.
Howard will make the third start of his career after filling in for an injured Nick Mullens for two games late last season. He completed 44 percent of his passes for 365 yards, 1 touchdown and four interceptions in four games last year. He was at his best running the ball, carrying 44 times for 239 yards and a score.
Redshirt junior Kwadra Griggs appeared to have an edge on the job to start fall camp, but he missed four practices with an injured finger and wasn't quite 100 percent throwing the ball when he returned to practice.
USM beat Kentucky 44-35 last year in Kentucky. Saturday’s game will be shown on CBS Sports Network.
