With the Sept. 2 season opener drawing near, Southern Miss head coach Jay Hopson and some of his players will make their way to Biloxi on Friday night.

USM’s Gulf Coast Beach Bash is set for 6 p.m. Friday at the Hard Rock Casino and Hotel.

Admission to Beach Bash is $15 per person and $7 for children ages 12 and under. The ticket price includes dinner and a cash bar will be available.

Tickets can be purchased online at SouthernMissAlumni.com/BeachBash2017.

Southern Miss features more Coast talent this year than in recent seasons.

Former Long Beach receiver Trevor Terry, a sophomore transfer from Jones County Junior College, and D’Iberville’s Jacques Turner, a redshirt freshman defensive end, are set to make significant contributions this season.

USM also adds three new freshmen — Gautier offensive lineman Paul Gainer, D’Iberville defensive back Tyler Barnes and Biloxi receiver Tim Jones.

Other Coast products on USM roster are Junior defensive back Darius Kennedy (Resurrection), redshirt junior long-snapper Austin Keel (D’Iberville), freshman receiver Brock Byrd (Long Beach) and junior receiver Jacob Jones (Long Beach).

USM will kick off the 2017 season with a 3 p.m. home game on Sept. 2 against Kentucky.

All proceeds from Beach Bash, which is sponsored by Keesler Federal Credit Union, benefit the Gulf Coast Metro Alumni Chapter Scholarship Fund.

Watch list

USM senior running back Ito Smith was named Thursday to the watch list for the Doak Walker Award, which goes to the nation’s top running back.

Smith has also been named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award.

The Mobile native ran 265 times for 1,459 yards and 17 touchdowns last season. He also caught 43 passes for 459 yards and two scores.
