Ole Miss' Moody, MSU's Weatherspoon pick up SEC honors

The Southeastern Conference announced its annual awards on Tuesday with Ole Miss' Stefan Mooday and Mississippi State's Quinndary Weatherspoon among the honorees.

Moody, a senior guard, was named to the All-SEC First Team, while Weatherspoon landed a spot on the All-SEC Freshman Team.

Texas A&M's Billy Kennedy earned SECCoach of the Year honors while Kentucky sophomore Tyler Ulis was selected the SECPlayer of the Year by the league's coaches. Ulis was also named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Alabama's Retin Obasohan earned SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, LSU's Ben Simmons was tabbed SEC Freshman of the Year and South Carolina's Duane Notice was voted SEC Sixth Man of the Year.

It is the second straight first-team nod for Moody. He is first Rebel since Ansu Sesay in 1997-98 to earn back-to-back first-team honors.

The fifth-fastest player in reach 1,000 career points in Ole Miss history, Moody leads the SEC, and ranks ninth nationally, in scoring at 23.1 point per game. He needs only eight points to become only the fifth player in Ole Miss history and the 26th player in SEC history to top 700 points in a season.

Moody and the Rebels open SEC Tournament play at 6 p.m. Thursday against the Alabama.

Weatherspoon

Weatherspoon's honor makes it the second-straight season a Bulldog has been named to an All-SEC team by the league coaches, with Craig Sword earning All-SEC Second Team laurels last season. The Canton, native is also the first Bulldog since Sword and Gavin Ware to be named the All-SEC Freshman Team.

"It's a real honor to be named to the All-SEC Freshman Team. All the credit goes to my coaches and teammates for this honor," Weatherspoon said in a release. "I've just been working as hard as I can to get better and help my team get better this season and we're not done yet. This just motivates me to work even harder and try to help our team finish out this season on the highest note possible."

In SEC action, he leads the team with 14.9 points and 27 steals.

Mississippi State (14-16, 7-11 SEC), which capped off its regular season with a 79-66 victory at The Hump against Auburn, begins SEC Tournament play on Thursday against Georgia. Tip is set for 8:30 p.m. from Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.
