Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce watch Texas Tech win Final Four game in Minneapolis
Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City Chiefs teammate Travis Kelce watched Mahomes’ alma mater make history again at the Final Four at Minneapolis.
Kelce and Mahomes, the reigning NFL MVP and Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback, cheered on the Red Raiders in their 61-51 victory over against Michigan State in the second men’s basketball semifinal game on Saturday night. Texas Tech, after reaching its first Final Four in school history, will play Virginia for the national title on Monday night.
Late in the first half, Mahomes was shown on the video board during a timeout and the Texas Tech fans in the building let out a big cheer.
Mahomes, who was spotted by fans earlier at the Radisson, the Red Raiders’ team hotel, arrived during the first NCAA Tournament semifinal between Auburn and Virginia. He was quickly ushered from the floor level of a packed U.S. Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings, to an upstairs suite.
He and Kelce, the standout Chiefs tight end, are close friends who often attend marquee events together in Kansas City and elsewhere.
Earlier, Mahomes tweeted that he’d taken batting practice with his godfather and former major-leaguer LaTroy Hawkins, who spent the first nine years of his MLB career with the Minnesota Twins.
The Red Raiders players watched the first half of the first semifinal, then retreated to their locker room to prepare for the tipoff of their own game against the Spartans.
In the second half of Tech’s victory over Michigan State, Mahomes was caught by CBS’ cameras celebrating.
Mahomes has been active in his support of Texas Tech throughout the tournament. He watched Tech play Nebraska in November at the Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City the day after the Chiefs lost in overtime on the road against the Los Angeles Rams.
