Could Southern Miss land commitment from former Long Beach standout?

Trevor Terry was one of the most productive receivers in Mississippi last season. The Long Beach product caught 62 passes for 1,234 yards and 12 touchdowns — all among the state’s leaders.

And yet, when he graduated early his only four-year scholarship offer was from Alcorn State.

At 6-foot-1, Terry had the size.

With a 4.5-second 40-yard dash time, his speed wasn’t a hindrance.

Academics weren’t an issue, either.

Instead of joining the Braves when he felt he could play at the highest level, Terry opted to enroll early at Jones County Junior College and participate in spring football.

His decision is already paying off as he picked up a Southern Miss offer after attending the school’s camp over the weekend.

Interestingly enough, it was Jay Hopson, Alcorn State’s former coach, who once again felt Terry was deserving of a scholarship offer.

"We didn't really talk about it but I think he just remembered me,” said Terry, who also holds an offer from James Madison.

Motivated WR

Terry said the lack of interest in high school both surprised him and continues to fuel him.

"I felt like I was one of the best receivers in the state and my numbers didn't lie,” he said. "I got the junior college offer and decided to make the best of it. Especially after going to this camp, I'm a strong believer that everything happens for a reason.”

Terry said he’s already improved in just a semester at JCJC. The biggest takeaway, he said, is that he’s not the clear-cut fastest player on the field anymore.

"Everybody is fast,” he said. "In high school I could just run past folks, but it's not like that in college.

"The windows are smaller and you're never wide open in college."

Standing out

Terry, who has already bulked up 20 pounds from his prep playing weight to 185, didn’t mince words when discussing his camp performance.

"I showed out in one-on-ones,” he said. "At the line of scrimmage, it gets competitive. Everybody is talking trash and it gets heated. They tried to jam me at the line and they couldn't touch me. I caught a lot of deep balls. I feel like I was just faster than everybody and they couldn't hold me.

"I was feeling it — I knew it was going to be a good day."

While Terry was confident in his performance, he was a bit surprised it only took USM 20 minutes to extend a scholarship offer after the conclusion of the camp.

"I was hoping for an offer, but I thought Southern Miss would want to see me play a season at Jones and get some film on me,” He said. "But they already knew who I was. I guess they just fell in love with me.”

Commitment coming?

So, is the feeling mutual?

Terry, who can transfer to a D1 school after one season at JCJC, said he expects to commit within a month.

"I just want to get it out of the way,” he said. "There’s a very strong possibility I'll go to Southern Miss. I feel like that's where I want to be. I haven't done anything yet. I just want to let the dust settle. I don't want to rush into anything, but I think I'll be ready within a month."
