George County’s Walker Robbins earns All-American honor
George County baseball star Walker Robbins added another honor to the list on Wednesday.
Robbins was named Second-Team All-American by MaxPreps following an outstanding senior campaign for the Rebels. He led George County to the state title series in both his junior and senior seasons.
Robbins, who was a standout first baseman and left-handed pitcher for the Rebels, made the MaxPreps team as an outfielder.
The St. Louis Cardinals drafted Robbins as an outfielder in the fifth round of the MLB Draft in June as the 166th selection overall. He signed with the Cardinals on June 16.
Robbins batted .477 with three homers and 16 RBIs as a senior. On the pitcher's mound, he was 8-2 with a 0.67 ERA in 13 appearances. Robbins, who threw a pair of no-hitters this year, struck out 110 and walked just 18.
Robbins was named the Sun Herald Player of the Year for the 2016 season.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Robbins has played in eight games for the Gulf Coast League Cardinals this summer and is 2-for-29 at the plate as he makes the early adjustment to pro baseball.
