Jo C. Conner captures Mississippi State Bowling Championship

DIAMONDHEAD-- Jo C. Conner won the Women's Mississippi State Bowling Tournament singles championship on Sunday after four weekends at Park Ten Lanes Diamondhead.

The Tri-Cities bowler scored 736 for her three games to win by seven pins. Conner played consistently, scoring over 200 in each game.

"I am happy. I finally got it," Conner said. "I just had more fun. When I'm playing in the league, I got anchor, and expected to win. Down here, I'm just having fun."

Michele Turberville of Tupelo finished second with a score of 717. LaReina Adams of Central Mississippi finished third with a score of 715.

First place awarded a prize of $375,$225 second, $155 for third. The top 84 places all received cash prizes.

In the doubles division, Romelda Harrison and Cathy Jones of Meridian won with a score of 1365. Cindy Carpenter and Holly Watts from Pinebelt was second at 1359. Sherry Harris and Romona McGrane of Meridian finished third at 1357.

First place in doubles split the $500 top prize, followed by $250 for second and $200 with third place. The top 42 teams all received cash prizes.

Over 400 women competed in the singles, doubles and team events that began on April 30 and ran four consecutive weekends. One hundred nine teams of four women competed in the team category.

Mississippi Tournament director Barbara Burcham, in her ninth year as director, felt the tournament was a success.

"It is a lot of fun," said Burcham. "We raise money to give to the Veterans Homes in Mississippi. We raise a lot of money."
