Jackson basketball star Malik Newman plans to verbally commit to Mississippi State on Friday, according to a CBSsports.com report.
The Callaway High School product plans to make his decision known in a noon announcement on Friday.
Gary Parrish of CBSsports.com left open the possibility that Newman could change his mind, but he quoted two unidentified coaches as saying Newman's commitment to MSU is “done.”
The 6-foot-2 Newman is ranked as the No. 5 recruit in the nation by 247 Sports and is considered the top point guard.
If Newman does land at MSU, it would be a major get for newly-hired coach Ben Howland.
Kentucky, LSU and Kansas are also in the mix for Newman.
