Report: SFA's Underwood favored Southern Miss over Marshall

Marshall has hired its new basketball coach, Dan D'Antoni, but it didn't come without a fair amount of drama and Southern Miss' own coaching search factoring into the process.

According to a report by Chuck Landon of the Huntington (W.Va.) Herald-Dispatch, Stephen F. Austin head coach Brad Underwood, a candidate for the Marshall job, was more interested in the Southern Miss opening than joining the Thundering Herd.

Landon's report said that Marshall offered its position to Underwood and that the former Kansas State and South Carolina assistant used Marshall as leverage in talks with USM officials.

Eventually, Underwood turned down Marshall and settled on the 66-year-old brother of Los Angeles Lakers head coach Mike D'Antoni.

Another coach considered a possibility in the USM search, Eastern Kentucky's Jeff Neubauer, actually accepted the Marshall job before having the original offer later rescinded.
