Picayune returns to the top of the Sun Herald’s South Mississippi prep boys basketball poll.
The Maroon Tide (19-3) moved into the No. 1 spot by sweeping St. Stanislaus and Long Beach last week, as the Top 10 had its biggest shakeup of the year.
Picayune hasn’t lost to a Mississippi team this season and began the season ranked No. 1 before Moss Point passed them in the ratings.
“You (the Sun Herald) are saying we’re the No. 1 team, but we’re still trying to get better and take it one game at a time,’’ Maroon Tide coach Daniel Kennedy said.

St. Stanislaus moved ahead of Moss Point for the second spot, beating the Tigers at HoopsFest last weekend at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
A two-game suspension by Travis Rasco and Travis Jackson had a role in costing Moss Point (20-3) its top ranking. The two seniors were among six Moss Point players involved in a fight against Division 7-4A rival Stone last week.
Biloxi (14-4) jumped from seventh to fourth after its red-hot week, edging No. 5 Harrison Central and beating D’Iberville. The 5A South state title may come through either Biloxi or Harrison Central.
“We’re a young team and I’m pleased with their progress,’’ Indians coach Seber Windham said.
On the girls’ side, Pass Christian (20-2) retained its ranking in the Sun Herald poll. The Lady Pirates are looking like 3A state title contenders.
The girls’ Top 10 rankings also played its version of musical chairs, as several teams moved up and down the Coastwide poll.
Hancock (16-6) moved to second, taking control of the Division 8-5A standings. The Girls’ 5A South state title may run through Kiln.
A dark horse in the 4A South State race may be Stone, who rose from sixth to third by sweeping Moss Point and Vancleave.
Bay High jumped to fourth after beating previously second-ranked Long Beach last week. The Lady Bearcats had three starters out with the flu and fell to fifth. “What we went through last week was awful,’’ Lady Bearcats coach Terry D’Angelo said.
