Germany Doesn't Have the Top Player: World Cup Group E Best Player Rankings

After so many months of buildup and anticipation, we’re finally here: the World Cup.

It’s the biggest edition of the crown jewel sports tournament in history, with 48 nations battling across three different countries over the summer to see who will raise the legendary trophy.

In Group E, Germany is the only team to have experienced that honor, hoisting the World Cup trophy by winning it four times.

While maybe not as star-studded as other German squads, this iteration of the team is still deep enough that they can contend for the championship.

But do they have the best player of Group E?

Here are my top three picks before the event begins.

3. Joshua Kimmich (Germany, Bayern Munich)

When it comes to pure football intelligence, there are few better players in North America this summer than the heart of Bayern Munich and the German National Team. Kimmich is a player who can stabilize even the most chaotic formation, and is the type of talent that can elevate a good squad to a great one with his extraordinary vision of the field.

2. Florian Wirtz (Germany, Liverpool)

If Kimmich is the brains of the German team, then the artistry should come from the foot of Wirtz. Two years ago, he was the most talked about player on the planet, leading Bayer Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga to take down Kimmich’s Munich. He was the chosen one. And Liverpool agreed, paying an astronomical number of over $150 million to sign him. And though he didn’t live up to the hype in his first season in the Premier League, he’s a player that comes alive in the big moments and has the ceiling to be ace of this entire group.

1. Moisés Caicedo (Ecuador, Chelsea)

Ecuador arguably have the best defense in the entire World Cup, and it all begins with their defensive midfielder Caicedo. He wins balls at an incredible rate, never seems to get tired, and is an incredible passer if that wasn’t enough. Ecuador only gave up five goals in 18 games during World Cup qualifying, and Caicedo is the player who personifies the team the best with his endless work ethic. Wirtz has the higher ceiling between the two, but if I could only choose one heading into the tournament, it’d be the Chelsea standout.
