Ex-Bills head coach Sean McDermott resurfaces at Giants minicamp

Many were surprised when Sean McDermott didn’t take another NFL head coaching job after the Buffalo Bills fired him early in the offseason.

Given the 52-year-old coach’s resume - a 98-50 record with eight playoff appearances, seven double-digit win seasons, five division titles, and two AFC Championship Game appearances in nine seasons - many expected McDermott to have his pick of jobs.

However, he elected instead to take the year off from coaching, move to North Carolina to watch his daughter finish out her senior season on her school’s softball team before she enrolls at Notre Dame next year, and prepare for the 2027 coaching cycle and whatever job opportunities come his way.

But McDermott couldn’t stay away from an NFL field for too long. In fact, he popped up on Monday at the minicamp of one NFC East team.

“Former Bills coach Sean McDermott is taking in today’s Giants minicamp practice with (general manager) Joe Schoen and (owner) John Mara,” Dan Duggan of The Athletic reported.

Giants fans shouldn’t get too worked up over McDermott’s surprise cameo.

The team just hired head coach John Harbaugh after he parted ways with the Baltimore Ravens, and it’s unlikely (short of something crazy happening like an 0-17 season) that New York would sack Harbaugh after just one season and replace him with McDermott.

McDermott has a close friendship with both Harbaugh, whom he was an assistant coach with in Philadelphia under Andy Reid, and Schoen, who worked with McDermott in Buffalo when he was an assistant general manager.

It’s believed that McDermott will be coaching in the NFL in 2027.

Among the jobs that could come open around then include the Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
