Blue Jays Facing Decision After Daulton Varsho News

The Toronto Blue Jays outfield has suffered plenty of injuries during the 2026 MLB season. The latest everyday player to go down was center fielder Daulton Varsho, who is dealing with left wrist inflammation that forced him to exit Friday's game against the Baltimore Orioles early.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider revealed after the game that X-rays came back negative and it is not expected to be a lengthy absence. However, Varsho has not returned to the lineup since.

On Monday, ahead of Toronto's series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies, Varsho was again not in the lineup. Instead, the Blue Jays turned to Myles Straw in center field.

Straw is more than capable of handling duties out there and is an elite defender. However, there is a reason he is a bench option and not an everyday player, as he offers little value in the batter's box.

That is not the case with Varsho. Across 63 games, the 29-year-old Gold Glover has posted a .256 batting average, .331 on-base percentage, .738 OPS, five home runs and 17 RBIs.

Schneider announced the latest update on Varsho's condition while speaking with reporters pregame. Varsho is set to miss his third straight contest.

Schneider revealed that Varsho was able to hit "with some pretty good intensity" off the pitching machine and is trending in the right direction, but the soreness has not fully subsided (h/t Shi Davidi of Sportsnet).

Schneider also admitted the team is now facing a decision on whether Varsho can suit up anytime soon, and if not, they could place him on the 10-day injured list to fully recover.

While that would be the most disappointing outcome for Varsho, there is no reason to rush him back and risk reaggravating the injury and forcing a lengthier absence.

It is still early June, and the Blue Jays have big goals of returning to October and making another deep run.
