Gulfport’s own Derick Hall shines in Super Bowl, helps deliver title to Seattle
Derick Hall was born prematurely and without a pulse at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport in 2001. He weighed less than 3 pounds and was given a 1% chance at life after being resuscitated by doctors.
That 1% won a Super Bowl in San Francisco a quarter-century later. Hall made multiple key plays for the Seattle Seahawks’ defense to help secure a 29-13 win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX on Sunday.
Hall made two sacks and had another two quarterback hurries. His biggest play came late in third quarter when he sacked Patriots quarterback Drake Maye and knocked the ball free in the process.
The play directly led to the first touchdown of the evening in what had been a defensive slugfest.
Seattle’s defense produced six sacks and forced three turnovers. Hall entered the game with two sacks all season for the team that drafted him out of Auburn in 2023.
Hall is the second South Mississippi-born athlete to win a Super Bowl. He joins Brett Favre, who was also born at Memorial Hospital.
Hall starred at Gulfport High School as a two-way standout and a four-star prospect. He’s made 110 total tackles and 12 sacks in his NFL career.
