An Ocean Springs man has received official certification for a state record catch.

The Mississippi Commission on Marine Resources announced the certification on Tuesday, establishing a new record for the Southern Hake.

Jim Smith of Ocean Springs caught the 1-pound, 0-ounce fish using conventional tackle.

The scientific name for the fish is Urophycis floridana.
