Lucedale man killed in Thankgiving traffic accident

A Lucedale man was killed and another seriously injured in a one-car accident Thanksgiving day, authorities said.

Bayron Hernandez, 20, was pronounced dead at George County Hospital, Master Sgt. Johnny Poulos said.

He was a passenger in the 1999 Buick Regal driven by Noe Pena, 22, also of Lucedale. Pena was transported to George County Hospital with serious injuries, Poulos said.

Pena was northbound on Mississippi 613 just south of Lucedale about 7:30 a.m. Thursday when his car veered off the left side of the road. He overcorrected and his vehicle came back onto the highway and crossed over to the right side of the road, where it overturned several times, he said.

Hernandez, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected from the car as it rolled. Pena was wearing a seat belt, Poulos said.

Hernandez’s death was the only fatality reported by Highway Patrol statewide on Thursday, he said. The holiday weekend, which began 6 p.m. Wednesday, continues through midnight Sunday.

“We’re urging people to make good, responsible decisions when they’re out there driving,” he said.
