DMR calls for early shut down of oyster season

The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources will close all state waters to oyster harvesting at 3 p.m. on Saturday until further notice.

“This action is being taken in order to better conserve the oyster resource. The unusually low harvest levels we have seen in these areas was anticipated after experiencing the high losses to the oyster reefs this summer,” DMR shell bureau director Scott Gordon said in an official statement.
