Account set up for homicide victims' family

GULFPORT - Orange Grove Church of Christ has set up a benefit bank account to help the family of a mother and son killed at their home on Monday.

Contributions to the Leslie E. Ferguson Jr. Benefit Account can be made at any branch of Hancock Bank.

Ferguson's wife, Karen, and son, Trevor, were killed at their home on Kent Avenue on Monday. The mother was 45. The son was 21. Ferguson preaches at the church on O'Neal Road.

The suspected killer, Paul Buckman, was found dead at his apartment on O'Neal Road soon after the slaying.

Police are considering possible motives, to include if Buckman killed them over the family's recent complaint that Buckman had sexually assaulted a family member, Police Chief Alan Weatherford said this morning.

"It's possible," Weatherford said. "We're still wrapping up loose ends."

Autopsies are pending.

Elders and deacons at the church are making arrangements for a crime-scene cleanup unit to make the Fergusons' home liveable.

Police were called to the Fergusons' home after their 5-year-old boy ran to a neighbor's home for help. The mother and son were dead when police responded to the 2:14 p.m. call for help.

Authorities have declined to say if the two were shot, but have said Buckman was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his apartment less than two miles from the Fergusons' home.
