The Gulf Islands National Seashore has closed the Mississippi barrier islands due to severe tropical weather in the Gulf.
The islands include: Petit Bois, Horn, Cat, East and West Ship. All visitors currently in these areas of the park are being instructed to leave.
Seashore Superintendent Daniel R. Brown said: "With this tropical weather system in the Gulf, and possibly taking aim at the Coast, we have to begin now in order to safeguard human life."
Gulf Islands National Seashore will reopen after the storm has passed and the staff has time to clean up. For more information call Davis Bayou Visitor Center at 228-230-4100.
