Material on Deer island is not oil, officials say

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality tested material collected from the bottom of the Mississippi Sound at Deer Island and determined that it is not oil from the BP oil spill. The black, hardened material appeared to resemble asphalt-like tar mats from the spill that have plagued Alabama, Florida and other barrier islands. But the DEQ said today that the material at Deer Island, reported to the Sun Herald by fishermen, was cemented sand with organic material in it. Read more in the Sun Herald on Thursday.
