JACKSON COUNTY - A Helena man has been arrested on a charge of murder in connection with the shooting death of his girlfriend, Sheriff Mike Byrd said this afternoon.
Authorities believe Dennis Hurley, 56 , shot the woman, who was not immediately identified, some time Thursday night and sat with her body during the day Friday. Hurley, the sheriff said, then went to Pensacola, Fla., where he apparently ditched the gun.
Divers are currently searching for the weapon in Florida, Byrd said.
It appears the shooting occurred after Hurley got into an argument with the woman and grabbed a gun. He told investigators, Byrd said, that the weapon discharged when she went to grab it from him. Hurley surrendered to authorities Saturday. He's currently jailed at the Jackson County jail.
