GULFPORT - Coroner Gary Hargrove has identified the victim of an officer-involved shooting as a 59-year-old Gulfport man. Gayron Sanders died at the scene in a confrontation with Gulfport police Thursday morning. Hargrove said an autopsy showed he died of a gunshot wound to the chest. "It's still under investigation," Hargrove said. "I'm still getting statements and other agencies are looking at the case." Gulfport police officials said Sanders and the officer each fired only one shot in a standoff behind Goodwill Industries at Norwood Village Shopping Center. The shopping area is off U.S. 49 in Orange Grove. Police received 911 calls reporting a man with a gun around 10:30 a.m. The Sun Herald is following this story and provides an update as details are released and in Saturday's editions.
