Sound Off: Give tax breaks on supplies instead of clothes

Plastic folders with three prongs for holding paper are a trendy item on school-supplies lists across South Mississippi. S&L Office Supplies in Waveland carries a durable line of plastic folders in various colors.

Necessity

Gautier residents need auto stores and repair shops so they can fix their cars and drive the long distances between businesses.

Change, indeed

Hillary: “We got/get the change.” Quarters dimes nickels, lot of times pennies. Some got U.S. indebted in trillions.

So sad

The look on Bernie’s supporters’ faces, when they realized they would have to pay for their college tuition, was heartbreaking.

All that matters

To quote Jacqueline Kennedy: “ If you bungle raising your children, I don’t think whatever else you do well matters very much.” Better parenting, better child environment, better America.

Equal praise

Plato: “Let praise be given equally to women as well as men who have been distinguished in virtue.” Go Hillary!

Library policy?

Wednesday, the air conditioning was malfunctioning in the downtown Gulfport library and customers were “a sittin’ around” (as we say in the South) yapping on their cellphones. While AC problems are not unusual in many libraries, what is the overall policy of cellphone use in libraries?

Give us a break

We don’t need a tax holiday on $99 boots and tennis shoes and designer clothes. We need a tax holiday on notebooks, pencils, paper and all the other name-brand stuff the teachers think they cannot live without. Some of the supply lists cost more than $100 per student, and it is getting worse each year. Give us some relief on the necessary stuff, not the frills.

Unbelievable

I couldn’t believe a representative of the U.N. had the nerve to come to the United States and tell us how to handle demonstrators. That was in Thursday’s Sun Herald if you want to read the article. Instead of demonstrators asking for a permit to demonstrate, we should just allow them to tell when they are going to demonstrate. He went on to tell law enforcement how they should respond to the demonstrators. I wonder if when he leaves the U.S. if he is going to Russia, China, North Korea, etc., to tell them how to handle requests for demonstrations. Of course, I understand why he thinks the U.N. can tell the U.S. how to treat demonstrators when they got President Obama to sign the Small Arms Treaty, which he will try to get through Congress in the lame duck session. The treaty contains all the things that they have been trying to do with gun control through Congress, and are going to use this as a back-door way to accomplish their goal. I just love the elite talking about gun control when they are surrounded by people with guns to protect them, some at taxpayer expense.
