Sound Off for March 14

My kind of socialism

The word "socialism" is always attached to Bernie Sanders. Bernie is democratic socialist, not a Marxist socialist. Marxist socialism is a type of communism. A democratic socialist believes in capitalism. Bernie would keep our system as it is, with one exception: our government would step in to correct (not take over) any private corporation that intentionally harms the American people. This is my kind of socialism.

Common sense

As the spouse of a special education teacher, I completely understand the frustration, stress and unrealistic tasks put on educators. The biggest problem I see is the Mississippi Department of Education expects more documentation than education. In order to meet their demands, teachers can only spend 10-20 percent of their time teaching and the remaining time documenting goals, objectives and IEPs. Special ed students can be an integral part of society after graduation, but the focus should be on life skills, including math and reading (not Biology I). Administrators should engage MDE and agree to use a practical, common-sense approach to educate these children instead of worrying about "covering their bases" and appeasing those in Jackson. They should support their teachers and stop the "burn out."

Big shoes to fill

Most people can remember individuals that inspired or improved them in some way. Leading by example and taking time to help others elevate themselves and broaden their view of the world can help everyone. Dr. Carol Payne this is you. You are the best principal that has ever walked through Anniston Avenue Elementary's doors. Every Anniston student is a "leader" because of you. The person who takes your place has big shoes to fill. Gulfport School District is loosing an awesome principal.

Daylight losing time

How about we move the clock forward at 3 p.m. on a Friday afternoon.

Report debris, lights

In answer to "Lights, please" article, I called in this problem. Thanks so much for being proactive, I just wish there were more people like yourself. I am always calling in hazardous debris on the interstate, as well as light outages. Here is some information to put in your contact list:

-- City of Bay St Louis (467-5505) handles Highway 603 lights starting from Longfellow up to the interstate

-- MDOT (832-3426) handles the interstate ramps and interstate

-- City of Waveland (467-4134) handles from Highway 90 and Highway 603 up to Longfellow

Anticipated volume

We've all heard about the highway to hell and the staircase to heaven. That should tell us about the anticipated traffic volume to each place!
