Sound Off for Jan. 14

Too close for comfort

Has anyone noticed the disturbing trend of business building a new store as close as possible to their competition? Wal-Mart has already run all mom and pops out of business, now they are working on Winn-Dixie and next is all the dollar stores. Walgreens is doing the same to CVS. Just because you can, does not mean you should.

Too loose with my money

I don't think any of my BP settlement money should be spent on things that make a profit. Why should anyone make a profit off of my BP money? If the powers that be were really concerned about the people, maybe a better use would be to use the money to take care of the wind insurance fiasco that affects everbody below I-10. Yes, I did say, My BP money!

Too negative

As evidenced by his Sunday column, Brian Allee-Walsh has far too much negativeness for the always optimistic Saints fans. Maybe his views would better be shared by a rival market or an occasional the glass is half-full theme?

Too graphic

Can we please dispense with all the grotesque anti-smoking ads? There's one with a young man buying a pack of smokes. He puts his money on the counter and the cashier says "not enough," so the guy pulls out a pair of pliers and starts pulling teeth. Another has a young girl putting her money on the counter, cashier says "not enough" so she starts pulling skin off her face. Seriously? Exactly what I want to see when I'm eating. I mean, by now, there can't be anyone with enough sense to light a cigarette who doesn't know smoking is bad for you.

Too dark

So now that the six-week ban on exercising after working hours in Jones Park has expired, how about turning on the lights again in the parking lots and through the walkways? While the area provides some relative safety, without lighting, it is a scary place at about 6 p.m.

Too many left behind

Our governor wants to help parents move their children out of "failing schools" -- not to correct the problems for all children who remain in those schools, because he's only responsible for the education of some children? So much for: leave no child behind!

Too late and too loud

I live in Bay St. Louis, and we hear fireworks close to us, too. It's startling, annoying and rude. We are elderly and have pets, and there are many folks in the same situation. I remember when fireworks were only for the Fourth of July, at night. It was wonderful and meaningful then. But the noise didn't go on and on days later.
