Sound Off for Dec. 21

Self importance?

No one seems to have any common sense these days. But many seem to have a very exaggerated sense of self importance.

How to do it

Climate research happens when climatologists painstakingly compile huge amounts of global weather data covering many decades, run it through supercomputers, filter out short-term cycles, and look for long-term global trends. Googling up a factoid that backs up what the talk radio "expert" said is not climate research, and neither is your gut feeling about recent weather in your home town.

In the heart

You can remove all the monuments and change all the flags you want, but you can't change the past or people's hearts. All that will be accomplished is a handful of people will feel good for a short time.

What currency accepted?

Last week the American Humanist Association threatened legal action if the Nativity wasn't removed from the Harrison County Courthouse. The supervisors wasted no time voting for the Nativity to remain where it is. I started researching the AHA; their motto is "Good without a God." They also solicit donations. My question is, what currency does the AHA accept? Certainly not the American dollar; it is printed with "In God we trust."

Enforce the rules

I've often subscribed to the saying that you can't be taken advantage of unless you allow it. Store owners/managers: start making store closing announcements 30 minutes prior to the store closing. And update until 10 minutes before the time. Then announce the registers will close in 10 minutes and all purchases must be completed by then. And enforce it.

Inconsiderate customers

There isn't a lot you can do to change inconsiderate customers who linger. What you can do is professionally enforce the store times. You can't make everyone happy but you can take steps to make sure customers know the closing times and then enforce them.

Page 1 story?

Thank you for the article "Volunteers' Christmas Spirit helps feed the homeless." Sun Herald, this story was on page 2 but should have been on the front page. We need to know more about the acts of kindness that spread the true meaning of the Christmas spirit. A special thank you to the citizens that went out to feed the homeless. They shared their time, energy and love in a special way. Hopefully, this is just the beginning. Merry Christmas.

No questions answered

I must agree the so-called GOP debate was terrible. It was nothing but a talkathon; they could not even answer the questions.
