Sound Off for Dec. 18
Can anyone tell us where to find Leon Kelner CDs on the Mississippi Coast? Please let us know via this column. Kelner, a band leader and pianist, had the house band at the Broadwater Beach Hotel in Biloxi for a number of years.
No raise
No cost-of-living raise for seniors yet again this year and our Medicare rates increasing only means one thing, war on seniors.
Other names
There is already a Bonefish at Edgewater Mall. We Southerners are always fixin' to or saying, "Y'all come," want to "hug one's neck." Why not name the alley in Gulfport "Fixin to Alley" or "Y'all Come Alley" or "Hug Your Neck Alley"? I think folks would want to know what we are fixin' to do.
Tree-saver
If we can't get the oak tree whisperer (aka Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes) to go save the Lovers Lane oak in Ocean Springs, maybe we could dig or lower the road next to the oak to make more clearance. If it goes, the oak on the south end of Washington will be next to go.
My objection
I am opposed to the Nativity scene on display at the Harrison County courthouse not on religious grounds or separation of church and state. My objection is based on this being such a cheap and tacky plastic display. Rather than spending money hiring an attorney, perhaps county officials should invest in something that doesn't look so cheap.
We're on to you
Dear telemarketers: We do not mind if you call our home for when your call pops up "unknown number," we simply do not answer. We are intelligent enough to know that no reputable business or company would use an unknown number anyway. Neither do we care to listen to a prerecorded message or to someone who can't even pronounce our names or speak proper English. Besides, we know the phone numbers of our friends and associates and, no, the phone ringing doesn't bother us. But I bet an unanswered phone bothers you.
The American way
It is really funny. My Mom and Dad came from the old country and quickly had to learn the American way. They did not try to change those already here to change to their way of living. They were happy as can be to be living here. I appreciate being a first-born in this country as I saw the sacrifices made by my parents to be model citizens. Never would we try to change what others did or believed in. That was not the American way. What happened since the 1930s?
