Sound Off for Dec. 8
A big thank you to the GPD, GFD, ambulance service and Mississippi Power for their quick response to the accident on 50th Avenue on Saturday night. A power pole was destroyed, and we were in the dark for several hours. They were all professional, and I am proud to call them our own.
Who cares about us?
U.S. Senate Republicans voted together to defeat two common sense measures: the first would have prevented people on the federal terrorism watch list from buying guns, and the second would have enabled universal background checks. Our Senators care more about the NRA than they do about the safety of us, the citizens.
Gateway to criminality?
I'm replying to "How to reduce crime." Please tell me you're not saying that wearing saggy pants will create crime. What a sad conclusion. I'm sure the people who embezzled from their employer had on saggy pants. What a person wears doesn't create crime.
Not a solution
In the wake of the San Bernardino shootings, President Obama's only answer is stricter gun control laws. California already has the strictest gun controls in the nation and yet the terrorists were able to obtain many weapons and ammunition. Next step for Obama -- confiscation of all weapons and ammunition. At that point, we will be defenseless against terrorists and criminals who seem to have no problem obtaining weapons and ammo no matter how strict the controls.
'Saggy' response
This is in reference to the "saggy pants issue" in Gautier and assertions proposed by "How to reduce crime" in Saturday's Sound Off. Indeed, there are several things to consider [in Gautier], least of which is "saggy pants" worn by youth (who for generations have rebelled against older standards of "proper" attire). As a starter, who wants to relocate a business to this town, period? Not even a "Neighborhood Wal-Mart," which is a fair litmus test that absolutely no business desires yet to do so. Apparently, when businesses see "absolutely no one walking around town in plain-view" this is a far greater deterrent to their interests than your antiquated theory of the pant-sagging youth roaming the city doing so. What is in "plain view" is a barren wasteland formerly known as a mall flanked by an unnecessarily expensive water fountain flowing mysteriously clean water (relative to most Gautier residents' brown-colored standard). "Nip it in the bud," indeed. Sell the fountain on EBay so all can shower in clear water.
