Sun Herald readers weigh in on local and national topics.

Biden tried

In 2021, Kerr County, Texas, rejected federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act allocated for flood warning systems, opting instead to allocate the money toward law enforcement. This decision, influenced by local residents’ resistance to “federal overreach” and a desire to avoid being “beholden to the Biden administration,” doesn’t look so good now, huh?

Immigration

The national media needs to separate legal immigrants from immigrants who bypassed the legal route to enter the country illegally. Most American support legal immigration. I believe that the current methods employed to find them, process them, and remove those that do not qualify to remain in country be removed as quickly as possible be done. In the meantime those here determined to be here illegally be detained as the law specifies. Not only should illegal workers be detained but employers who hire them, contract them, or otherwise not verify they are here eligible to be employed be arrested and prosecuted. We don’t need new laws to enforce existing laws.

Elderly care

The majority of elderly and disabled residents at nursing homes depend on Medicaid to pay for their care. Medicaid waivers allow the elderly to be cared for in their homes.

Keep them at home

Rouse’s has a no dog policy except for service dogs, but they don’t enforce it. I see shoppers with dogs in their buggies strolling around like the rules don’t apply to them. Worst yet, the manager won’t say anything.

Disaster response

As with a tree falling in a forest that no one hears, there is still a sound, though not detected; likewise when there is a disaster that no one reports, neither the weather service nor disaster recovery officials, there is still a disaster — but the government it seems doesn’t have to pay for it.

Medicaid

To the writer of “Freeloaders,” how do you see people taking advantage of Medicare and Medicaid every day? How do you know if those people have a job or not? How do you know if they have Medicare, which is health insurance that people have paid into through withholding from their paychecks? They are entitled to Medicare because they paid for it and reached the age of eligibility. As far as Medicaid, you don’t know what the circumstances are that allows people to quality for Medicaid. Medicaid does not give people money, it is a medical insurance for low income people.

Citizenship

The President has declared that he’s considering taking away Rosie O’Donnell’s citizenship. Whatever you think about O’Donnell doesn’t matter; it’s irrelevant. He’s already talked about getting rid of his one-time good buddy/donor, Elon. To think of something so unconstitutional shows that, in his mind, completely ignoring the First Amendment, we are clearly on the road to authoritarianism.
