Sound Off: July 5, 2025
Sun Herald readers weigh in on local and national topics.
A liberal’s patriotism
I proudly hung a USA flag on my fence this morning. Then I began reading the Declaration of Independence for the umpteenth time. All of us should re-read it thoughtfully every year. I find its declaration of beliefs and values touching, inspiring, and moving. They are why I am a committed American citizen — born and raised here in the Deep South. I want to promote and defend those beliefs and values. Conservatives usually disagree with me about how to do that, but if we keep our disagreements within the bounds of the beliefs and values of the Declaration, and resolve our differences by means of well-informed debates and unintimidated voting, the USA will continue to be an engine of progress and a beacon of hope.
Some celebration
There are protests across America not against China, Russia or crime, but against law enforcement and President Trump. Happy 4th of July.
Deceived
After years of running on an agenda and promise not to touch Medicaid and Medicare, President Trump plans an Independence Day celebration on signing his bill that does exactly that. His supporters will ignorantly support him as he can now give billionaires their tax cut that cost trillions to the deficit. The Republican Congress are cowards to allow this just to protect their own jobs.
Yes, let’s prosecute
I read a Sound Off talking about prosecuting protesters who vandalize to the fullest extent of the law. Did you feel the same way on Jan. 6? Or was that a “day of love” for you, too? The law should apply to both parties.
Going in circles
I had to spend time in New Jersey while employed at Ingalls. They had roundabouts, also known as “traffic circles.” If they are so great, why is New Jersey getting rid of them?
All that winning
Over the past month, President Trump has successfully ended wars, took Iran off the table and the BBB just passed.
Priorities
I can’t believe with all the injustice in our country, the biggest issue on the Supreme Court’s small mind is transgender people and if poor little Johnny has to hear a story about a gay family. As a gay person who grew up in the 80s, trust me it wasn’t because of a story or a teacher. This is just the same bigotry and hatred that tried to use religion to justify racism.
