Sound Off: July 4, 2025

Be safe
Thanks for the story on fireworks safety. Celebrate America, but do so safely.
Fireworks
Please celebrate our nation on July 4. Please don’t continue firing things off on July 5 and 6 and 7 and so on.
Iran
Liberals out there should hide in shame. Presidents Obama and Biden paid billions to the Iranian mullahs to cease uranium development. How’d that work out?
Trash
Driving around town it is easy to see that the trash problems are caused by deadbeat vacant property owners. Code enforcers ride around, ignoring what they see. We live in a city, not a rural community with wooded areas.
So who is the problem?
The ADL’s Center on Extremism found that white supremacists and anti-government extremists accounted for most fatal attacks in recent years.
Enforce the law
Please show examples of the suppression of civil rights. There is a right to protest, that is freedom of speech. When vandalism and destruction of property begins, it becomes a crime, and I say prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law. Using the Guard to supplement law enforcement is a expedient way to achieve order.
What’s in a name?
President Trump wants to remove the name of Medgar Evers from a ship named after him, and he wants to restore the name of Robert E. Lee to Fort Gregg-Adams. Medgar Evers served the United States in uniform in World War II, then came home to Mississippi and campaigned vigorously and peacefully for people’s Constitutional civil rights — only to be murdered by a racist in his own driveway with his family inside. Robert E. Lee, by contrast, led Confederate troops to kill many thousands of U.S. soldiers who were fighting to hold our nation together and abolish slavery. It would be shameful to delete Evers’ name and restore Lee’s.
