Sun Herald readers weigh in on local and national topics.
USPS
The United States Postal Service is the only government agency that is not funded by taxpayer dollars. Unlike all other government agencies/services USPS has to support itself. The problem is that Congress has mandated that the postal service has to fully fund its retirement system in advance. This is the biggest drain on its finances. If you don’t like getting junk mail six days a week call your senators and representatives and tell them to treat USPS the same as all other government agencies. My guess is that they’re trying to crash the postal system so private companies who donate to them can take over mail delivery. And, I don’t work there or know anyone who does.
No more
This is a request for the Sun Herald to cease all political Sound Offs. What’s the point? We already know there is hatred for President Trump, as there was hatred for President Biden. This will continue into the future regardless of who the president might be. (Complaining) all the time about politics is useless. I vote to put an end to all political Sound Offs and let’s start using only Sound Offs that can be of use to all.
It was obvious
Revelations now abound, in multiple books and statements, about President Biden’s cognitive decline. As if it’s new information and wasn’t plain as the nose on your face. Even now, news media outlets and the White House press corps wonder out loud whether they were duped by the White House and whether the nation was intentionally lied to and misled about Biden’s ability for the office. At this point, if you’re still uncertain about that you are either willingly deceived or absolutely a dunce. Yes, he was unfit, you’ve been lied to and someone or group was for all practical purposes running the country.
Just wrong
It is certainly despicable to hear of the innocent young Jewish and American couple killed by a Palestinian sympathizer. At same time we should be concerned that, with U.S. support, Benjamin Netanyahu is wiping out Palestinians in Gaza, starving women and children while destroying their infrastructure so that its uninhabitable.
Not a game
President Trump said “It’s time to play the game the way I know how to play the game.“ Newsflash: It’s not a game. It’s people’s lives.
Special session
Years ago, I went to the first day of the state Legislative session. I was shocked that it was a big party. After a lot of handshaking and schmoozing, the legislators signed in to their committees and left. A whole day wasted. I did get to meet with the Coast delegation, which was concerned with my issues. Are they the only ones working? The Legislature is going into yet another special session to get its work done. Underpaid teachers take their work home if they don’t finish during working hours. Most people would be fired if they repeatedly didn’t get their work on time. And our legislature gets $1,500 a month when not in session?
Did he forget?
President Trump gave a speech on Memorial Day saying we never forget our fallen heroes. Wasn’t he the one who said Sen. John McCain wasn’t a hero because he got caught? Many of those soldiers had been prisoners of war. This coming from a man who dodged the draft for bone spurs.
West Point address
I watched the entire West Point Address by our President. While smart enough to include enough references to patriotism, he couldn’t resist multiple exaggerations of his own abilities and accomplishments, such as his successful business career (with 6 bankruptcies and exploitation of our legal system, i.e., he sues everybody). He made no mention of the “bone spurs” that allowed him to evade the draft during the Vietnam War. He continues to blame past administrations (except his first) for all problems. He denigrates our allies’ contributions in past wars, includes bizarre references to “trophy wives” in his personal anecdotal stories of success in life, claims political persecution for documented and adjudicated illegal activity (he’s a felon), and continues on his America First (and alone) direction he wants to take our country.
GOP values
I no longer identify as a Democrat or a Republican — I consider myself an independent conservative. While I don’t align completely with either major party, I tend to vote with the one that upholds more conservative values. In recent years, the Democratic Party has embraced increasingly socialist policies and, in places where they hold power, have mismanaged cities and states to the point of decline. As a result, I find myself continuing to support the more conservative of the two parties — the Republican Party — because it better reflects my values and the direction I believe our country, state and city should take.
Guns
The man who killed another man outside the restaurant in Gulfport stated the “dead man punched him and I shot him.” What happened to fist fighting? Even in the Wild West they wouldn’t shoot an unarmed man.
Great cease fire
So President Trump’s great cease fire agreement with Vladimir Putin results in the largest drone bombing of Ukraine in 3 years. All should wonder how long it will take the self-serving Congress, and President to recognize Russia is not our friend and we cannot win an international conflict without our NATO allies.
Hollow words
So it turns out the guy who was going to settle the Russia-Ukraine war “in 24 hours” was full of it. Never would have guessed.
