Sound Off: Sept. 6, 2024

Welcome

I welcome the Cruisers even though I avoid Highway 90 when they are here. The fact that we don’t treat the young people visiting during Spring Break the same way reminds me that racism is still alive. You can make all the excuses you want, but businesses do not welcome them, and city officials try their best to discourage them from attending.

A problem

The liberal conundrum: If you don’t admit that a border problem exists, how do you blame it on Donald Trump?

Road problems

Can Gulfport get rid of these bone jarring railroad crossings that are useless? The worst is 33rd Avenue and 30th Avenue. There are trees growing through the tracks. Come on.

The vice president

To “Nothing done”: Yes, there are things Kamala Harris didn’t accomplish as vice president. But the Constitution gives the VP only two tasks: to preside over the Senate and vote to break ties. Whatever else a VP does is up to the president — and Homeland Security, not the VP, handles border issues. At President Biden’s request, Harris brokered a deal for U.S. companies to create jobs in Central America, which will encourage would-be migrants to stay in their own countries. If Donald Trump were really a smart businessman, he could have made the same deal, but he’d rather use immigration as a cudgel against Democrats.

World choice

Donald Trump is calling the vice president’s rise to the forefront a vicious and violent overthrow of President Biden, and yet he refers to his own failed attempt at a violent overthrow on Jan. 6th as a mostly peaceful protest by “very special people” and wants to pardon them. There has got to be a short in the wiring of this man’s brain.

Scared

Vice President Harris keeps saying Donald Trump is scared to debate her, but she is the one scared to do an interview by herself. She will not debate Trump with Fox mediators because she is scared she will have to answer tough questions on her economic, border and energy policies.

Hard to do

Kudos to Donald Trump for accomplishing a feat rarely seen: He manages to be both immature and in mental decline due to age at the same time. Congrats.
