Sound Off for Jan. 27, 2024

Government shutdown

Our representatives in Congress really need to start working for the people instead of against each other along party lines. We are now on third continuing resolution since budget was supposed to be passed back in September. I’m going to be seriously evaluating new candidates during this year’s election.

Dealing with China

How much money does it take for Mississippi’s governor to change his position from No Chinese ownership of Mississippi land to yes on buying Mississippi land? $1.9 billion. Sad.

How soon they forget

Sen. Wicker is currently featured in a political ad strongly criticizing President Biden for his handling of the immigration problem at the border. Perhaps he has forgotten that President Trump’s handling of the border situation was so deplorable that Sen. Wicker himself co-sponsored a bill calling for the release of children taken from their parents and kept in cages and forced to sleep on the floor.

Doesn’t sound like pro-life

If Mississippi were really a pro-life state, we would have the lowest rate of infant mortality in the nation, not the highest. Apparently being pro-life is a political posture for our Republican legislators, not a serious commitment. Very sad.

No contesting

To the sarcastic Sound Off writer who says that Democrats are going to contest Donald Trump’s big win against Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley. No, Democrats will not call the election fradulent. Democrats know that voter fraud is not an issue. Apparently, Republicans have no understanding of our party platform. We believe that 99% of our elections are free of fraud. Trump just used that lame excuse because he didn’t win the 2020 presidential election.

Enabler Joe

Courts told President Biden he didn’t have the authority to forgive student loans but he has continued to do so. This is pattern and practice for him because he’s clearly been the super enabler for his train wreck of son Hunter Biden. Joe Biden obviously doesn’t believe in letting young adults be responsible and accountable for their individual choices and decisions. You have a four-year degree obtained via student loans but can’t be bothered with repaying the debt. No problem, keep your phone and partying. We’ll use taxpayer money and dissolve that pesky debt for you.

Sounds like Socialism

Under capitalism, private individuals and corporations have to use their own money to implement their business decisions. Under socialism, the government uses taxpayers’ money to implement business decisions. Which is Gov. Reeves? Socialist or capitalist? He recently took $1.1 million dollars from taxpayers to develop an industrial park; now he is taking $350 million more taxpayer dollars to entice an EV company to come to Mississippi. Under capitalism the government is not supposed to be in cahoots with business like that. It sounds like Governor Reeves and our legislature are not so anti-socialist after all. Or they are simply corrupt and the taxpayers are fools. Or it should be recognized that a mixed economy is best.
