Sound Off for Nov. 4, 2023
Much to do?
The Ornithology Society must not have much to do these days. Actually for those who want to know what is “wokism” ... this is a perfect example. It amounts to pure hogwash. Not one person’s life will be changed for the better due to renaming of birds. How about let’s decide to just move on.
Way too early
Greedy retailers have stretched the Christmas season into a three month affair. This has taken away the special quality of the holiday and makes it about nothing but dollar signs. I saw the first Christmas themed ad on Oct. 1. By the time Thanksgiving rolls around, I am tired of Christmas.
Political ads
I find it interesting that Delbert Hosemann’s ads before the primary election when he was attracting votes from Republicans were the same old silly ads with him and the older lady who keeps mispronouncing his name. Now that he’s running in the general election and trying to attract votes from Democrats and independents he’s running serious ads talking about his record. I think he’s done a good job and plan to vote for him again, but I wish he didn’t have to dumb down his ads before the primaries.
America’s future
Are you better off today than the days from 2016 and 2020? No inflation, no energy problems, less crime and no wars. Granted, COVID happened and changed the playing field politically. We are, unfortunately, involved in a potential worldwide conflict. Forget personality. We need a strong leader and we don’t have it now. Young people need to really think about their future. Limited jobs, no future. Your choice.
Good points
The “mass shootings” writer makes some excellent points about the shortcomings of mental health services and possession of weapons. However, stating that it is increasingly difficult for lawful citizens to purchase firearms is ridiculous. Second, no one is “chasing” gun makers. Third, some of these so-called self defenders are shooting because their doorbell was rung or a soccer ball rolled onto their yard and some of them are not charged.
The conservatives
I read a lot in Sound Off about being a conservative. What is so great about being a conservative? Conservative states are the poorest in the country so it isn’t money management that makes them great. And why do people think only conservatives are Christians and go to church? Also for those that are looking at liberal states and cities and seeing the disaster they are, please name specifically which ones you have actually visited.
Gas prices
In answer to the Sound Off regarding the low price of gas that is now $2.59, I would remind that person that in the spring of 2022 gas got to a price of over $4 a gallon. One should remember all the harm that did to the poor and middle-class families that were trying to make a living. In November 2020, Trump’s last year, AAA reports that the national average was $2.11. So if you want to give Biden credit for $2.59, go ahead. His policies have been very detrimental to the economy and working class people in our country. And those are the facts.
Liberal trash
I understand the Sun Herald is a propaganda paper, but can you please place a few more conservative letters so you don’t go under? I know you have convinced yourselves that you are losing readers because they want digital and not written, but you are completely wrong. I guess as long as your California owners are calling the shots, you will just pump liberal trash.
Upcoming election
Maybe the Sun Herald isn’t convincing its staff to vote for liberals. Maybe a lot of Mississippi voters realize voting Democrat is simply what’s best for our state. No one in the state is “forcing” people toward a Democratic candidate. Mississippi ranks the second-worst state in the country (according to the U.S. & World News report.) due to low levels of health care access, poor health outcomes, poor infrastructure, high poverty rates, and an educational system in crisis. We have the highest percentage of families in poverty. Twenty years of Republican “leadership” has lead us to this. Neither Trump nor Biden has anything to do with those numbers. Vote for the candidate that can pull Mississippi out of this mess. And vote for candidates who allow easier voting options, broadly drawn districts, and fairness and equality … you know, like a good Christian should do.
